For the last several years I have written every day. This practice came about as a matter of necessity, and since starting it, writing daily has become a habit that grounds me in memory, reflection and poetic association. There is nothing that radical about how I do it: I keep a notebook, and every day—usually early in the morning—I write in it. This notebook is a diary and it also contains my hand-drawn calendars for the year and months and weeks. It includes lists and quotes, and sometimes collages and photos I paste in. It is also the place where poems begin, for that is the primary purpose of this notebook—to provide a location and an occasion for writing poems. It is also the physical representation of my relationship to time.
